Wetlands Lake IJsselmeer

Common terns at the sluice complex of Lelystad

Common terns have been nesting on and near the sluice complex of Lelystad for a long time. The situation at the sluice is not ideal, as it has to be mowed frequently. They have been nesting on a neighbouring island, however this became unsuitable due to vegetation succession. In March 2018 the vegetation was removed and a salt layer was added to constrain succession and make the island suitable for breeding again. Together with Stachys, Jan van der Winden investigates the effect on vegetation and colonisation by common terns. This was commissioned by Provincie Flevoland and in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat, Dierbaar Flevoland and Landscape Management Flevoland.
