Bird mortality caused by powerlines at Naardermeer
Due to the increasing demand for electricity, the high-voltage grid between Diemen, Lelystad and Ens is being expanded with new connections. Natuurmonumenten is concerned about potential bird mortality in the Naardermeer area, as birds may see the high-voltage lines poorly or too late under certain conditions and collide with them. This risk also applies to Natura 2000 species such as the purple heron, cormorant and white-fronted goose.
For this reason, Lowland Ecology Network was asked to investigate the risks of bird casualties associated with a route north of the Naardermeer. In a desk study, we assessed the risks for fifteen bird species based on population size, current mortality, daily flight movements, collision probabilities, reported casualties in the literature, and expected additional mortality. In a field study, we examined current collision victims along an existing power line north of the Naardermeer. We conducted weekly searches for collision victims and carried out carcass-disappearance and detection-probability trials. In addition, we recorded high-risk flight movements across the route. For many species, negative effects on the Naardermeer populations cannot be entirely ruled out.
