Nest density of Common terns at Marker Wadden

Common terns are threatened by human activities, and more recently by habitat loss and food shortages. Since the construction of Marker Wadden in 2016 — which aimed to create suitable breeding and foraging habitat for common terns — large breeding colonies have established. To develop effective conservation strategies for Marker Wadden, it is essential to understand nest-site selection, nest densities, and food ecology during the breeding season. For her graduation research project, Femke van Zetten studied the nest densities of common terns on the extensive open areas of Marker Wadden, as well as the relationship between the length of fish caught and fed to chicks and the distance to the foraging grounds.
