Wetlands Lake IJsselmeer
Birds of the Marker Wadden
The Marker Wadden have been developed as a bird paradise. Since 2017, we have been investigating which birds settle at the new islands and two indicator species are used to determine reproductivity. This concerns the common tern and pied avocet. The common tern indicates the availability of pioneer biotopes for nesting and food availability in the IJsselmeer and Markermeer. We want to know if common terns will benefit from the newly created shallows and improvement of clarity of the water. Pied avocets are indicative for the productivity of the water bodies and mudflats for waders. From 2019 onwards we also study reproduction of little terns and organise the monthly bird census with volunteers. We work on behalf of KIMA and together with Natuurmonumenten and many volunteers.
